Share system e-scooters get a green light

The City of Stirling has extended its e-scooter share scheme for another two years. The city currently has a fleet of 250 purple e-scooters operating in coastal areas of Scarborough, Trigg and Watermans, then inland to the commercial areas of Karrinyup and Innaloo.

The city’s current 2-year contract with Beam Mobility was due to expire at the end of January 2026 and will now run until January 2028.

This decision comes ahead of WA Parliamentary Inquiry findings into eRideables due for release on 4 December. The City of Stirling acknowledged it has limited authority over the use of privately owned e-scooters that often exceed legal speed limits and present enforcement challenges, but is confident to support the share system where e-scooters are speed-limited in specific geofenced areas by the system operator.

Beam Mobility has reported only four minor injuries from approximately 80,000 rides within the City of Stirling in two years. These figures support the city’s view that the share system e-scooters, when properly managed, pose a low risk to public safety.

The new contract’s financials have not been made available to the public, but we can expect the City to benefit from the arrangement, and hopefully invest the funds into better paths.

The standard rate for hiring a Beam e-scooter is currently $1.00 to unlock + $0.55 every minute. A portion of these charges usually goes towards the local government authority where the e-scooters are operating. A recent article by Perth Now revealed the City of Perth’s e-scooter share system had generated $569,319 (excluding GST) in revenue for the city in 22 months of operation.
