WestCycle welcomes Parliamentary Committee’s eRideable and e-bike findings

WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw: “The findings affirm that with the right regulation, education and infrastructure e-bikes and eRideables can safely deliver great benefits to everyone from kids to the elderly.”

WestCycle welcomes the release of the Parliamentary Inquiry’s findings into the safety, education and regulation associated with eRideables and e-bikes, and the Committee’s clear recognition that these transport modes are an essential part of Western Australia’s transport system.

As the representative voice for the hundreds of thousands of Western Australians who ride each week, WestCycle is pleased the Committee engaged deeply with the community and industry submissions, and has taken on board many of the suggestions we made to improve safety for riders across the State.

Standout recommendations of the Committee’s ‘Ride Safe’ report include:

  • Increasing investment in infrastructure to better integrate e-mobility into our transport network.
  • Expanding WestCycle’s WeRideAble Program across the state to provide vital education to ensure young people are better informed about safe riding practices.
  • Stronger measures to improve device safety and quality including stronger product standards, retailer accountability and compliance. These steps will help ensure devices are safe, reliable and suitable for public use.
  • A comprehensive framework for data collection related to eRideable and e-bike use, crashes and injury rates.

eRideables and e-bikes are already delivering significant benefits across WA, enabling affordable, flexible travel, recreation and social connections for people of all ages and abilities.

WestCycle welcomes the Committee’s acknowledgement of these benefits and fundamental support of electronic mobility devices as transport modes.

“This Inquiry is a turning point for how Western Australia embraces the future of transport,” said WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw.

“E-bikes and eRideables are here to stay, and we welcome the Inquiry’s acknowledgment that these transport modes have an important role in our State’s transport future.”

“The Inquiry affirms that with the right regulation, education, infrastructure and enforcement e-bikes and eRideables can safely deliver great benefits and opportunities to everyone from kids to the elderly.”

A call to implement existing plans

The State Government has already identified actions to improve safety through the Road Safety Action Plan 2024–2026 and the Review of the eRideable Road Rules (2025), and the Inquiry has broadly supported these positions. WestCycle calls for these plans to be fast-tracked and properly resourced, ensuring that regulation keeps pace with community needs and technological change.

“We welcome the bipartisan Inquiry’s focus on clarity, safety and education – not unnecessary barriers – so that more Western Australians can safely enjoy the freedom and flexibility these devices provide,” Bradshaw added.

WestCycle looks forward to working closely with the State Government to implement initiatives that support safer and more connected e-mobility across WA.
