WestCycle welcomes the Australian Government’s decision to introduce a national safety standard for e-bikes and other e-micromobility devices, helping ensure devices sold in Australia meet clear and consistent safety requirements.

The West Australian government has been leading the charge for national harmonisation and the proposed adoption of the EN15194 standard for e-bikes, including limits on motor power and assisted speed, will strengthen Australian Consumer Law.

It will provide greater certainty for consumers in a more controlled retail environment that will put a clamp on the importation and sale of non-compliant, high-powered devices that fall outside accepted safety standards creates unnecessary risks for riders and the broader community.

E-bikes play a vital role in getting more people riding, reducing congestion, improving health outcomes and providing a practical transport alternative.

WestCycle supports this and other measures that improve safety, build public confidence and support accessibility of compliant e-bikes and eRideables, so Australians can continue to enjoy the many benefits that riding and e-mobility provide.

A note about it being a national alignment to strengthen Australian Consumer Law would be good. This is  a change for retailers.
