Women on wheels: 10 tips to enter your first bike race

Entering your first cycling event can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Here’s a few tips to help you get the most out of the wonderful world of bike racing…

  1. Choose the right event

Research different cycling events and choose one that matches your skill level and interests. Look for beginner-friendly events or those with shorter distances to start with.

  1. Train consistently

Consistency is key when it comes to training. Create a training plan that includes a mix of long rides, interval training, and rest days. Gradually increase your mileage and intensity as the event approaches.

  1. Invest in quality gear

Having the right gear can make a big difference. Invest in a good-quality bike, helmet, cycling shoes, and comfortable clothing. Make sure your bike is properly fitted to avoid discomfort and injuries.

  1. Join a cycling group

Joining a local cycling group can provide you with support, motivation, and valuable tips from experienced cyclists. Group rides are a great way to practice riding in a pack and improve your skills.

  1. Learn basic bike maintenance

Knowing how to perform basic bike maintenance, such as fixing a flat tire and adjusting your brakes, can save you from potential issues during the event. Youtube is a wonderful resource. Carry a small repair kit with you on your rides.

  1. Stay hydrated and fueled

Proper nutrition and hydration are crucial for peak performance. Drink plenty of fluids and consume energy-rich foods before, during, and after your rides. Experiment with different foods, snacks, drinks and supplements to find what works best for you.

  1. Practice riding in different conditions

Weather and road conditions can vary, so it’s important to practice riding in different environments. Get comfortable riding in the rain, wind, and on various terrains to build your confidence.

  1. Familiarise yourself with the route

If possible, ride the event route beforehand or study the course map. Knowing the route will help you anticipate any challenging sections and plan your pacing strategy.

  1. Set realistic goals

Set achievable goals for your first event, whether it’s completing the distance, improving your time, or simply having fun. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem.

  1. Enjoy the experience

Most importantly, enjoy the experience! Cycling events are a great opportunity to meet new people, challenge yourself, and have fun. Don’t get caught up in pointless comparisons, especially with men who may be in the same race – embrace your bike racing journey!
