Event Details:

WestCycle is excited to present a special edition of our Future of Mobility Seminar Series.

Join us at Curtin HIVE to experience the power of data visualisation applied to crash statistics and travel patterns of bike riders traversing Perth CBD.

In early 2023, WestCycle worked with teams of students from the Curtin University School of Management and Marketing’s Consultancy Capstone Unit to explore what could be learned from layered analysis of publicly available cycling data.

One team’s efforts stood out, and we are excited to be able to share their findings and generate a conversation about the future uses of their work with transport practitioners.

This free event is generously supported by Curtin University.

Cycling in Perth CBD: Unveiling Insights for a Safer, Vibrant, and Connected Future

Dr S Zaung Nau, Mingu Kang, Lu Wang and Calvin Lim

This presentation will share research findings on temporal and spatial variations of cyclist behaviour and safety concerns in the vibrant Perth CBD area. Our research aims to delve into the distinct preferences of cyclists, shedding light on diverse infrastructure options that cater to their needs.

Our comprehensive analysis encompasses four years of cycling trends, examining demographic factors such as age, gender, trip purposes, bike proportions, and overall coverage. These insights provide a deep understanding of cyclist behaviour and highlight key areas for improvement. But that’s not all—we also explored unexpected area focuses and surrounding infrastructure, fostering awareness among the government and cyclists alike.

Our presentation will reveal opportune timings, locations and socio-demographic profiles for promoting cycling activities throughout the year. We will discuss how we can uncover the perfect moments to inspire and engage cyclists, enhancing the cycling experience and shaping the future of cycling in the Perth CBD, more importantly, how we can create a safer, more vibrant, and connected cycling community together.
