National Road Safety Week: Sharing our paths and roads

Last week was National Road Safety Week, a perfect reminder to look out for each other on our roads and shared paths.

Whether you are riding, walking or scooting, everyone deserves space, patience and respect.
 
You might seen a little more yellow last week as a reminder to stay visible and stay aware. But the real message is how we move around each other. Slow down. Give space. Share safely.
 
If you are passionate about creating safer riding environments, WestCycle’s Ride Leader program is a great way to get involved and help lead the way across our community.

Simple changes to make streets better for everyone

Some of Perth’s quietest, most bike-friendly streets were made that way decades ago. In the 1970s, a group of streets in Rivervale became cul-de-sacs, and part of Copley Road is now Copley Park. In the 1980s, diagonal diverters went in on Keightley Road in Subiaco, and the City’s Safe Active Street later built on their success.

Shady lanes. Yes we canopy?

284 greening projects across Perth and Peel just received Let’s Grow Grants funding, and most of them are at schools. Shade on the way to school matters too. A leafy route makes walking and riding so much nicer in summer.

Tim Roach (Chair)

Elected Director | Off Road

Tim has been in senior leadership and strategic development roles for more than 20 years and is currently a project risk consultant, and a part time academic at Edith Cowan University.

He is a past Director of Executive Education in the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University and Assistant Commissioner and General Manager in the public service. He is an Accountant (FCPA) and previously sat on the Divisional Council of CPA Australia. Tim has been involved in racing mountain bikes, BMX and triathlon for many years, both as a father of two children who race and as a past and current bike racer.

Helen Sadler (Deputy Chair)

Independent Director

Helen is a Town of Cottesloe councillor and is the current Chair of WestCycle’s Transport Advisory Group.

A medical doctor, Helen is a strong active transport advocate with a focus on health outcomes and social well-being.
