Tonkin Highway Corridor – Roe Highway to south of Welshpool Road

Early works and temporary traffic changes

WestCycle have been advised that following the award of the construction contract to NRW, early works are commencing for the next stage of the Tonkin Highway Corridor upgrade between Roe Highway and south of Welshpool Road. The project will widen Tonkin Highway to six lanes, construct new grade-separated interchanges at Hale Road and Welshpool Road East, and deliver a new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists. These upgrades will improve safety, reduce congestion and provide more reliable travel times along this important transport and freight corridor.

Early works will be undertaken from Monday 3 August to Friday 4 September 2026 and will include potholing, geotechnical investigations and pavement sampling. The information gathered will help finalise construction planning and confirm existing ground, pavement and underground service conditions before major works begin.

Temporary Traffic Changes

To complete the works safely, while minimising impacts to road users, intermittent temporary traffic changes will be in place on Tonkin Highway, Hale Road and Welshpool Road East in Wattle Grove.

What to expect

  • Nighttime, short term, single-lane closures, verge works and reduced speed limits on Tonkin Highway between Roe Highway to south of Welshpool Road.
  • A maximum of two nights of works will be undertaken at each location.
  • Nighttime lane closures on Welshpool Road East in either direction.
  • Nighttime lane closures on Hale Road in either direction.
  • Daytime verge works and reduced speed limits on Welshpool Road East and Hale Road.
  • Construction vehicles, lighting and intermittent noise near work areas.
  • Traffic controllers and signage directing road users safely through the area.

Works will also take place near pedestrian and cycling paths. Where required, personnel will be available to assist pedestrians and cyclists safely past the work area. Please allow additional travel time, follow traffic signs and directions, and take care when travelling through the area.

Please note that the timing of the works may change due to weather conditions, operational requirements or workforce availability.
