“We’re back on bikes this year to give folks the chance to soak up that ancient worldview, raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and ways to look after country so the next generations can enjoy it too.”
The Beeloo Riding Series is back in 2024 with inspiring bike rides around Perth’s waterways.
Delivered by WestCycle as part of the Department of Transport’s Annual Activation Program, this unique family event combines family bike riding and ancient Nyoongar knowledge, with sessions led by Biboolmun Nyoongar man and Djoona managing director Joe Collard.
The four rides are held on Saturdays in April and explore Beeloo clan culture, language and history, including places of significance between Derbarl Yerrigan (Perth Waters) and Dhagarro (Canning River) areas – all on bikes!
Joe’s rides are slow-paced (about 10km/h) and include child-focused bike skills activities and games from CycleSense.
“Last year we found being on bikes was a great way to leisurely take in an area and share our Nyoongar heritage and understanding of the land and water,” Joe says.
“So we’re back on bikes this year to give folks the chance to soak up that ancient worldview, raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and ways to look after country so the next generations can enjoy it too.”
The Beeloo Series is for all riders 10 years or over with a roadworthy bike and helmet – under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The series will continue each Saturday in April from 2pm-4pm, beginning from different locations within the City of South Perth. Click here for more details and to register.
