WestCycle welcomes Jeff Hansen as new CEO

WestCycle is excited to announce Jeff Hansen as the new CEO of WestCycle after the retirement of current CEO Wayne Bradshaw.

Hansen is an experienced executive, board director and advocate who brings nearly two decades of leadership, organisational growth, stakeholder engagement and communications experience to WestCycle.

He spent 15 years leading Sea Shepherd Australia as Managing Director, during which time he helped grow the organisation into a nationally recognised conservation organisation. His experience includes building and leading teams, running campaigns, growing revenue and partnerships, working with Boards, government and industry, and bringing diverse stakeholders together around shared objectives, while also being a key spokesperson for the organisation across all media platforms.

A lifelong rider with vast executive experience

“Riding has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so the opportunity to bring together something I’m personally passionate about with nearly two decades of executive leadership and advocacy is very special,” the 53-year-old said.

“It’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to lead an organisation that represents something so important to so many Western Australians, and a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

The Perth resident and father of two teenagers added: “I’m also conscious that I’m joining an organisation with a strong foundation and a lot of great work already behind it. Wayne, the Board and the team have built something important for riding in WA, and I’m looking forward to honouring that work and building on it as WestCycle enters its next chapter.”

“What excites me about riding is just how broad it is. It can be competitive sport, recreation, transport, adventure, exercise, social connection, medicine for our mental and physical health, or simply a child’s first experience of independence and freedom. I think there is a huge opportunity to bring those different communities together behind a strong collective voice for riding in Western Australia.”

WestCycle board chair, Tim Roach, welcomed the new CEO: “Jeff has an amazing track record in building an organisation from a grass roots beginning, to becoming an internationally recognised leader in conservation. I think he is the perfect person to build on the strong foundations Wayne has established to make WestCycle a stronger advocate for riders and ensure WA is a great place to ride”.  Hansen takes up the role on November 24.

Riding and academic bio

Hansen began riding BMX as a kid – a bike he still has – before moving into road cycling and triathlon. He qualified for the Australian team for the Age Group Triathlon World Championships and has completed numerous half-Ironman events and two full Ironmans. More recently, he has competed in SeVeN gravel and three Tour of Margaret River road races, including a podium finish with his team. Jeff regularly rides road, gravel and mountain bikes in WA with the Blenders cycling group.

He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and also holds degrees in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (Hons) and a Graduate Diploma in Education.

Simple changes to make streets better for everyone

In the 1980s, diagonal diverters went in on Keightley Road in Subiaco, and the City’s Safe Active Street later built on their success.
