Riding should be a key wheel in WA’s Preventative Health Strategy

📸 Patrick Boere
Did you know the WA Government is developing the State’s first Preventative Health Strategy and calling for input from the community to help shape it?

If WA is serious about preventing illness, disease and injury and supporting health and wellbeing, riding must be part of the solution.

Riding is one of the most effective ways to improve physical and mental health, helping prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, Type-2 diabetes and obesity while supporting wellbeing and social connection. It is an accessible form of exercise that can be built into everyday life whether commuting, travelling to school, running errands or enjoying recreation.

Recognising that health is influenced by factors beyond healthcare, including transport, community connection and the built environment is vital. Riding delivers benefits across all these areas while helping create healthier, more liveable communities.

Investment in safe riding infrastructure should be viewed as a preventative health investment. Every person who chooses to ride is improving their health, reducing pressure on the health system (and road system) and contributing to a cleaner, more connected Western Australia.

Have your say here about what supports better health and wellbeing in the open consultation before 24 July.
