$100m funded 81 active transport projects in 12 months; let’s do it again (and again and again and again…)

WeRide Australia is urging the Australian Government to refresh its $100 million National Active Transport Fund for each of the next four years to boost, “safety, health, access and community wellbeing” across the country.

WestCycle, along with riding peak bodies in other States, local governments, the Australian Medical Association, AustRoads, the Australian Automobile Association, the Planning Institute of Australia and others support extension of the Fund that bankrolled 81 projects in the 2025-2026 Budget period. Of that $100m, $15.5m went to 12 WA projects.

While 81 projects received funding, another 250 projects were not successful, demonstrating the Australia-wide appetite for active transport infrastructure that better connects communities, reduces car dependency and congestion – but most importantly, drastically cuts injuries, hospitalisations and deaths.

A report from The Australia Institute in 2024 found three quarters of Australians support more separated paths, with about 60% supporting bike and e-bike purchase rebates, and active commuting allowances (per kilometre).

“Significantly increased national funding for active transport is a popular, sensible, economically beneficial and productive investment that supports families and communities across Australia,” WeRide’s pre-Budget submission states.
