Welsh MP Lee Waters MS has been at Parliament House in Canberra discussing how his government drove massive active transport change – including 20m/h (32km/h) limits in all built up areas across the nation.
Wales paused all new road works while it conducted an independent review to align projects with climate and safety targets – prompting the switch to 20m/h.
Wales also:
🟢 Established a Wales national transport strategy that prioritised modal shift.
🟢 Set a target of 45% of journeys to be made by public transport, walking and cycling by 2040.
🟢 Reset the remit for Transport for Wales as a multi-modal delivery body.
Created the role of a Future Generations Commissioner for Wales to help public bodies consider the long-term impacts of their decisions.
Mr Waters was invited by WeRideAustralia and the Parliamentary Friends of Cycling group, chaired by Member for Swan Zaneta Mascarenhas.
