The Federal Government has distributed most of its $100 million Active Transport Fund across the country, with about $15.5m going to 12 WA projects.
With local governments injecting another $13m into the 12 projects – half which are regional – the total investment comes to $28.5m.
The path building projects span the State from Nannup to Mandurah to Perth, Cunderdin and Karratha.
WestCycle welcomed the investment, noting WA’s share of the federal spend was above average.
“It’s great to see the Federal Government engaging the Active Travel Fund and improving bike riding facilities across the country,” said WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw.
“The spend here represents about 15% of the national allocation – a good result for WA where the level is typically 10%. The fact 50% of that is going to the regions is also great to see.”
“We applaud the Federal Government – and local governments – for supporting active transport and urge them to continue because there is much more to be done.”
Reshaping the transport future
The Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said the investments were about, “so much more than bike lanes and footpaths…”
“…it’s about reshaping our cities and regional centres, connecting our everyday places, and making our towns better to live in and easier to visit.”
