WestCycle Annual Report highlights a busy year across riding domains

Impactful advocacy, an expansion of our riding family to include eRideables, and growth in our membership, schools, education and events offerings were a few highlights of WestCycle’s AGM last night.

WestCycle’s Board, affiliate members and staff were on hand as Board Chair Debbie Millard and WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw presented WestCycle’s 2023-24 Annual Report.

The Annual Report showed a small financial surplus as our State’s peak riding body strengthened collaborations with community, industry and government to deliver better outcomes across diverse demographics and multiple riding and rolling modes – all guided by an impending and refreshed Strategic Plan.

Actions over the 12-month period included:

➡️ Influencing State and Local Government funding decisions – including maintenance – for better bike paths, path infrastructure (including detours) and trails across the State.

➡️ Becoming the peak body for e-scooter and other eRideable users and developing targeted Membership offerings for these riders.

➡️ Training more than 70 educators to teach bike education in schools, as our schools and education programs expanded into new areas like eRideables.

➡️ Being an engaged and representative voice for all riders in media debates and discussions around transport, active transport and road safety to elevate the profile and appeal of riding as a primary means to get around.

➡️ Developing resources like maps, data sets, conduct codes, project wayfinders and other advocacy resources to benefit the WA riding community.

➡️ Contributing to national debates and discussions with other riding organisations across the realms of advocacy, regulation and best practice in representing people who ride.

➡️ Hosting events that celebrate broad riding forms from family-focused gatherings in a variety of communities to award-winning fondos and races that bring elite racers together with the bike-curious in metropolitan and regional WA.

Board movements and tributes

We bid farewell to departing Board Member Shannon Arnott and thank her for all her hard work in the road and recreation space over many years, while welcoming Tracy Rainford to the Board.

The fact Tracy has been active in the Perth riding community for 25 years and has a robust background in corporate governance, people, leadership and organisational development made her a compelling choice for the Board.

“I’m passionate about helping more people to safely enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of riding across our State,” said Tracy, who holds post-graduate qualifications in Leadership, Human Resources, and Psychology and has completed the AICD Company Directors Program.

WestCycle CEO Wayne Bradshaw also paid tribute to Chris Tallentire, who in 16 years as the Member for Gosnells and then Thornlie became affectionately known as WA’s unofficial ‘Minister for Cycling’ for his undying advocacy for riding and active transport.

“On behalf of WestCycle and the broader riding community, I sincerely thank Chris Tallentire for his outstanding contribution to riding in our state,” Bradshaw said. “His advocacy and commitment have helped shape a safer, greener and more connected future for all people who ride bikes in WA.”
