Towards a cleaner, better market: WestCycle welcomes new e-bike import rules

The fight against unsafe and non-compliant e-bikes appearing on the Australian market won a significant victory today with the reinstatement of an internationally recognised e-bike standard (EN15194).

This is a huge win for rider safety, industry integrity, and the future of active transport and something all Australian bike organisations have been pushing for.

By reintroducing compliance requirements, we ensure e-bikes remain a trusted, sustainable option for commuting, recreation, and reducing congestion.

E-bikes empower more people to ride – whether tackling longer distances, carrying kids or shopping, or replacing car trips – and this regulation strengthens confidence in their safety and performance.

We applaud the collaboration between government, riding organisations, and industry to make this happen, in particular We Ride Australia and Bicycle Industries Australia for all their hard work in achieving this outcome.

In announcing the legislation, the Commonwealth Government said it would, “work towards a regulatory framework for e-mobility devices to ensure safe and consistent supply and use of these devices in the Australian market, while still promoting mobility and innovation.”

It would, “meet with relevant stakeholders to ensure the use of this standard is well understood and supported.”

WestCycle advocated for this regulatory change in its August submission to the WA Parliament Inquiry that can be found here.
