Tour de Detours: Testing detour functionality on the Mitchell Freeway

There’s been a few detours on the Mitchell Freeway of late associated with the Smart Freeways Project.

We get a lot of feedback about these detours so in the interests of lived experience, WestCycle donned helmets and rode through three of them last week.

Here’s our three key takeaways:

  • Directional signage was problematic on all three. Although good in parts, we were sometimes confused about where to go, especially at junctions and the beginning and end of the detours.
  • None of the detours had an on-site detour map with information about the project’s expected timeframe and explanation of the works being undertaken.
  • Online maps were often inadequate.
  • Other signage. Unnecessary use of ‘cyclists dismount’ signs.

We’ve sent a more detailed analysis to relevant parties and will share any feedback we receive from them.

What’s your experience of riding these detours – or others?

We’ve made a map where all detours can be found in one place: https://westcycle.org.au/path-detour-map/
