BikeSpot Insights: perceptions, crashes, infrastructure
ABOUT THIS MAP
In 2023, BikeSpot received over 72,000 submissions across Australia between 19 October 2023 and 31 January 2024, providing a powerful snapshot of how people perceive cycling safety across the nation.
The experiences people have while riding a bike play a critical role in whether they continue cycling. These experiences are shaped by both personal factors (like confidence or past experiences) and environmental factors (such as road design, traffic, and cycling infrastructure).
While we can’t directly interview every individual who contributed to the BikeSpot map, we can enrich these submissions by visualising them alongside other datasets to better understand the broader context of perceptions of cycling safety.
This map combines the BikeSpot dataset with:
• Road crashes involving bikes from the last five years (Main Roads WA),
• The current status of the planned Long-Term Cycle Networks (LTCNs) for Perth-Peel and available regional areas (WA Department of Transport).
