Here’s a lowdown on some of our recent on-the-ground advocacy work:
- Advocating for action to be taken to deal with the problem of motorbikes and other illegal vehicles on the shared path network. The state government has formed a steering group to come up with a strategy for action which WestCycle is part of, and will meet in early May.
- Micromobility and Freight PATREC project. WestCycle is on the steering group for this awesome project looking at the impacts and potential for growth of micromobility – including bikes, e-bikes, escooters, other small-light-electric devices – for the delivery of goods and the movement of people at the local level. More here: Micromobility and freight: Exploring opportunities in WA
- WestCycle wrote to the Town of Victoria Park Council to express our support for the ‘one-way traffic’ option regarding the delivery of a section of Principal Shared Path along Rutland Avenue in Lathlain. This is a hot issue in the local community at the moment, and we would love to see a resolution that includes not only building the PSP in a way that retains and enhances green space, but supports making all local streets safer and more pleasant for everyone to ride bikes. Background on the project here: Rutland Avenue – One-Way Trial
- We provided input into the early development of the City of Armadale Bike Plan. The consultation phase has closed for now, but you can have your say on the draft document when it’s released for comment in a few months: Local Bike Plan
- As usual, we are having ongoing discussions with various entities doing infrastructure work that disrupts Principal Shared Paths and their users, trying to get safer detours and better maps and communications to keep bike riders informed.
- Check Main Roads Paths and Cycling page for details of PSP detours along Mitchell Freeway, Tonkin Highway, Graham Farmer Freeway and Kwinana Freeway. We are pleased they have started including these updates on their Travel Map, and look forward to some interface tweaks to make it easier for bike riders to see path disruptions. - Please note: only certain Main Roads projects make it onto this list. METRONET, OMTID and other entities causing PSP disruptions generally will not have their projects listed on this page. We continue to encourage Main Roads to include all disruptions on this page to make life easier for those using the paths.
- Path impacts from METRONET projects are quite difficult to get an overview of as you need to click through each individual project: Projects
- We had a meeting with the Office of Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery about the Swan River Crossings project, which is to replace the Fremantle Traffic Bridge. There is a detour currently in place due to Beach Street being closed under the bridge – and there will be more disruptions and detours to come if and when approval is granted for the bridge replacement program to commence. We will continue to communicate with the delivery team and the community to achieve the best outcome for bike riders through the works. You will have to go here for the detour map, because it’s not on the Main Roads paths and cycling page.
