Reid Highway PSP in Caversham: detour in place from 1 December

The PSP will be closed from 1 December 2025 to make way for the Reid Highway Interchanges project. A detour will be in place until the project finishes some time in 2028.

WestCycle provided extensive feedback, with the help of a local bike rider, on the proposed detour route and temporary traffic management arrangements. After a bit of back and forth, we got a few good wins:

  • Throughout construction, Whiteman Park is kindly permitting access for riders from 6am to 6pm, via entrances at Drumpellier Drive (near Whiteman Park Station), Dulwich St, and Beechboro Road. This could be an option for some riders to simply avoid the detour altogether.
  • Old-style u-rails (you know the kind) at each end of the footpath between Sacramento Ave and Altone Road are being replaced with bollards.
  • We can’t take any credit for this, but the project was already going to do the same at the Bennett Brook footbridge, as well as installing some railings and undertaking maintenance on the path surface.
  • Speed limit lowered to 40km/h at the crossing over Altone Road to Thorburne Street, and the intersection of Daviot Road and Suffolk Street for the duration.
  • City of Swan is installing permanent, solar-powered lighting where the path goes over Bennett Brook.

Caution required, plan ahead

The detour is pretty long, and designed with the assumption that riders will be on the footpaths. While it’s good that two of the intersections will have 40km/h speed limits (including Daviot Road which is 70km/h), the speed limits everywhere else remain as they are.

Given the narrowness of the footpath, and many driveway crossings, many riders will choose to ride on the road even if they also don’t feel safe there. For this reason, we recommended the speed be lowered along the whole route, ideally to 30km/h. The number of riders expected to be using the detour was considered too low for such measures.

The detour route also coincides with some bus routes, which can create tricky situations for riders whether they’re on the footpath or the road. PTA are advising their drivers to look out for cyclists and signage along the route should help to reinforce this.

The project includes grade separated interchanges at Altone Road and Drumpellier Drive, and upgrades and extensions of the PSP. You can view the latest plans and ask the project team questions at a community drop-in session next week:

He is an Accountant (FCPA) and previously sat on the Divisional Council of CPA Australia. Tim has been involved in racing mountain bikes, BMX and triathlon for many years, both as a father of two children who race and as a past and current bike racer.
