SAFE SHARED PATHS FOR EVERYONE

Our shared path network is bigger and busier than ever!
With more people riding bikes, eBikes, eScooters and other eRideables — alongside people walking, running, or rolling with pets, prams or mobility aids — it’s vital that everyone looks out for one another.

Shared paths are an important part of our transport network. Just like on the road, we all need to be alert, courteous, and predictable to keep things flowing safely.

🚶‍♀️ Everyone – Stay Safe and Courteous

  • Look both ways before crossing or entering a shared path – just like a road.
  • Keep left and overtake on the right.
  • Look before you change direction.
  • Keep your headphone volume low so you can hear what’s happening around you.
  • Make eye contact, smile, and communicate clearly (and respectfully).
  • Move to the left if you need to stop.

🚴 Riders and eRideable Users

  • Ring your bell when approaching others, especially from behind.
  • Give at least one metre of space when passing.
  • Say a friendly “thank you” when others let you through.
  • Ride single file shared paths.
  • Stay on your side of the centre line unless overtaking safely.
  • Slow down and look both ways before entering a Principal Shared Path (PSP).
  • Use hand signals when turning, overtaking, or stopping.
  • Take extra care near children, dogs, and older pedestrians.
  • Always give way to pedestrians.

🚶 Pedestrians

  • Keep left and stay aware of your surroundings (not your phone!).
  • When you hear a bell, stay calm and move left – it’s a friendly warning, not aggression.
  • Keep pets, kids, and prams close to avoid blocking the path.
  • Stop only on the left-hand side of the path.

💬 Share the Path, Share the Smile

Walking or riding is a great way to connect with others. A simple smile, wave, or hello helps build a friendly and considerate path culture.

After all, shared paths are exactly that — shared — and it’s up to all of us to keep each other safe.
