Completed 17 December 2018
With line marking completed this week (17 December 2018), Christmas has come early and Stage 2 of the Vincent Safe Active Street is now (unofficially) complete.
The Safe Active Streets project aims to create a 30kmh speed zone, providing a safer environment for all users including bike riders, pedestrians and drivers as well as creating a more liveable streetscape by increasing street trees.
Phase 1 of the project (Shakespeare Street – Green Street to Scarborough Beach Road) was completed in late 2016 and initial indications are of reduced traffic speeds and increases in cycling and walking on and around this street.
Phase 2 extends Phase 1 further south on Shakespeare Street from Scarborough Beach Road and onto Scott, Bourke and Richmond Streets, connecting the bike boulevard to the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path and the future Loftus Street Shared Path.
The main difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 is the style of kerbing used and the width of the slow points and you may also notice a slight revision in the entry markings that reinforce the 30km/h speed limit with the goal that this reduces speeds on these roads.
