On Wednesday the 6th of February RCCC ran a twilight criterium at Driver Risk Management Centre at Perth Airport. This is the old RAC DTEC facility that some riders may remember from races we previously held there as well as races MCC ran some ten or so years ago.

The event was a test to see if riders where interested in such an event so that potentially we could run a series of these next summer. We had close to 70 riders take part which was a fantastic turnout. The response from the riders was overwhelmingly positive. If we can negotiate a favourable rate with Driver Risk Management we will be back next summer, most likely through December and January when the light conditions are most favourable.

The conditions were perfect. Only a slight sea breeze that dropped to nearly nothing for the A grade / C grade race. The temperature dropped nicely and was quite comfortable. The more technical nature of the course made it one for the breakaway with C grade being the only grade that finished in a bunch sprint. Matthew Connan won A grade, Wayne Thopmson B grade, Dave Croft C grade and Daniel Evers D grade.

We are also in negotiations with DRM about utilising the circuit for kermesse style winter racing as well as some Sunday criteriums next summer. For the winter racing they have indicated we can integrate the skid pans to give us a circuit over 2km in length.

Access to facilities like this are crucial to the ongoing viability of this sport. Our Radius Loop circuit has been very popular and is a fantastic venue for us. The reality is that as more buildings go up the ability for us to use it may be impacted. Particularly if we want to fully close it as we have been doing. The support of Ascot Sign Co, allowing us to use their building and car park, has been a game changer. We thank them for their generosity. DRMC provides us with an awesome venue, ideal for our purposes, with no impacts from traffic and a reduced demand on volunteers.

After ten years of persisting and trying multiple venues we feel as a club that the we are finally getting some wins. This has been our best season yet. We hope to cap it off with a huge Renae’s Race p/b Chaotic Energy at DRMC on March 15th. The inclusion of the Henk Vogels Snr Memorial Criterium on that program will make it the biggest days racing of the season. $3000 total prize pool plus primes. And like the majority of our racing, four grades for men and four grades for women.
