Many have been closely following the closure of the path behind the RAC Arena and there is a strong push to have the path re-opened. It’s great to see the cycling community making sure cycling infrastructure remains a priority.
The path was closed in 2017 as a result of glazing works that needed to be conducted on the building, presenting a serious hazard to users of the path. As these works near completion, we have been in discussions with RAC Arena to understand the plans to re-open the path.
It’s important to note that there is a strong desire from the venue management to reopen the path, however, there are some new circumstances that they are assessing first. Namely an increased risk at the Eastern end of the path now that there is a high volume of buses coming along Milligan Street. There are also other concerns in regards to event day traffic as well as the construction works behind the venue.
RAC Arena is conducting an assessment of these circumstances to ensure that if the path is re-opened it will not be more of a hazardous situation than currently exists, we will continue to have dialogue with them over this period of time to ensure a positive outcome for all.
The current situation highlights the need for a dramatic improvement in the cycling infrastructure through the CBD to ensure it is safe and separated. For the City of Perth to become a truly cycle friending capital city a lot of work needs to be done.
We will share further updates when they are available. If you would like to know more information please contact RAC Arena on firstname.lastname@example.org or 6365 0700
