A chilly autumnal morning draped a sleepy Chittering Valley as the 15th running of the Peter Clark Classic graced the Shire of Chittering for the second year in succession. The weather proved perfect for riding, resulting in a strong contingent of competitors for the event.
A strong field of 39 riders started the A Grade men’s event; racing 109km around the mixed terrain of the Chittering Circuit. The race began strongly with a good early pace being set. An early breakaway attempt by Eddie Hollands and Chris Beeck was reeled back comfortably by the bunch. Lap 5 saw a group of ten riders break away from the main peloton culminating in a solo attack by Henry Morley with approximately 20km to go.
Despite the determined efforts of the chasing riders, his attack proved to be decisive. Sam Welsford, after suffering from a mechanical in the first lap, courageously fought his way back to join the lead group and score a commendable 2nd place – giving the first two spots on the podium to Satalyst Giant Racing. Jonathan Bolton improved one place from 2012 by finishing 3rd.
