Perth will play host to the Union Cycling Internationale (UCI) Amateur Road World Championships (UWCT Final) from 1st September 2016.

After a successful bid by event organisers CIC Events, the UCI Management Committee made the announcement awarding Perth over three other candidates.

The event will attract riders from Australia and overseas to compete – offering spectacular and unique spectator opportunities, showcasing the city and its broader regions to a national and international audience.

UCI Vice President Tracey Gaudry expressed her delight at the announcement, “The UCI is dedicated to growing cycling participation worldwide and the UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) is our flagship series for amateur and recreational cyclists.” she said.

“To bring the 2016 UWCT final – the World Amateur Road Championships – to Perth is a massive coup for Australia; it will attract up to 1000 age group competitors from age 17+ to 70+ from nations around the world. The UCI congratulates the West Australian Government, CIC Events and Cycling Australia for bringing the 2016 World Amateur Road Championships to Perth” Gaudry concluded.

Erwin Vervecken from Golazo Sports has said “I’m happy that Perth has been awarded to organize the World Championships for amateurs and masters in 2016. Perth was the very first event that ever organized a qualifier round for the UWCT in 2011 and has since then been a very valuable and good organizer. I’m convinced that they will deliver a first class event!”

The UWCT is a series of UCI-sanctioned races that are held all over the world. The UWCT will comprise a maximum of 15 qualifier events, leading to the UWCT Final. UWCT Perth has established a reputation as a leading UCI-sanctioned qualifying event for amateurs and masters on the global cycling stage.

The UWCT Final comprises three main events:

  • 20km Time Trial
  • 20km Team Relay
  • Road Race between 90-130kms

The 2016 UWCT Final and Perth-held qualifying events are sponsored by the State Government, through Tourism WA.
