Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path Construction (Goody Close to Hutton Street) – Expected completion 2019
Update – 15 October 2018
A new section of Principal Shared Path will be constructed along the Mitchell Freeway between Goody Close (near Glendalough Station) and Hutton Street as part of the Mitchell Freeway southbound widening from Cedric Street to Vincent Street.
The new 2.1km section will complete an essential missing link in the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path and make the route quicker, safer and more direct for people walking and cycling. Two new grade separated crossings will be installed creating a completely off-road, continuous path with added width and access points will ensure a more accessible and convenient journey. This new section will eliminate the need to cross from one side of the freeway to the other multiple times.
The upgrade will include grade-separated crossings at Scarborough Beach Road via a bridge, at Hutton Street via an underpass and the Hutton Street freeway on and off ramps. There will also be an at-grade path along the Hutton Street on-ramp to provide connections to Roberts Street, McDonald Street, Hector Street, and Cape Street.
The section between Glendalough Station footbridge and Roberts Street will also feature a separate pedestrian section, making it the first ever cycle-only and pedestrian-only separated path on the Perth Principal Shared Path network and the first of its kind in WA. This will include a 4m wide path for people cycling and 2m wide path for people walking, with the non-separated sections measuring 4m wide. This design caters for high pedestrian movements to the train station as well as those people riding to work, to the city and local attractions including Lake Monger and Herdsman Lake.
Works will start south of the Glendalough Station footbridge and end north of the Hutton Street intersection, tying into the existing Principal Shared Paths at either end and is expected to be completed in 2019.
The second missing link of the Mitchell Freeway PSP between Civic Place and Erindale Road is expected to commence construction in 2019-2020.
