Meet WestCycle’s Mountain Bike Manager, Margaret McIlroy.

How/Why did you get into/involved in bike riding?

For me it all started in 2011 after a weekend in Margaret River with friends that included a mountain bike ride from winery to winery. From then on, I was hooked and a few months later I brought myself a Trek hard tail 29er and had entered the Cape to Cape.

What is your favourite bike riding experience/highlight?

I have had so many great experiences on my bike. Was it the personal escort to the finish line the first time my Bestie and I rode the Cape to Cape? winning a race on a borrowed fat bike? riding in Malaysia and South Korea? the first time I got air! or one of the many weekends away riding away with friends? well, no, all this takes second place to the myriad of emotions that I have experienced working on the Goat Farm Redevelopment. I have been very fortunate to work with a small but amazing group of dedicated and passionate people who did not give up! and WOW look at what we have achieved!

One tip you have for new/novice riders?

A beginner’s skills course is a great start and then go and join a club or group.

If you could ride anywhere in the world, where would you ride?

It would be Peru, maybe bike packing among the ancient ruins or in the Andes. Though it would have to include some long downhill runs and a shuttle of course.

Fun or interesting fact about you

I don’t wear cleats as I prefer to ride with flats, I might put on my cleats if I ride my road bike, but I rarely ride my road bike.
