An overcast and cool, but dry, morning greeted 156 of Australia’s best junior athletes for the first day of the 2017 Cycling Australia Junior Road National Championships (U15/U17).
The Individual Time Trial course along Penguin Road in Ulverstone, Tasmania, was a challenging 10kms for the Under 15s and 14kms for the Under 17s.
With 27 athletes from WA, one truck, three buses, a team car and borrowed marquee from Bendigo Bank, Team WA team setup along the train line in Ulverstone, a few hundred meters from the start line.
Team Managers, Coaches and Mechanics were kept busy ensuring all athletes had the correct equipment and junior gearing requirement, along with getting them to the start line.
The first WA rider in the Under 15 Women’s event departed at 9:07am in light winds but by the time the last WA Under 17 Male departed at 12:07pm, a strong easterly wind had developed challenging all riders on the return 7km of the course.
All athletes completed the course and are now looking forward to the challenging Road Race circuit tomorrow near Sheffield.
