Title: The Beverley Race
This race has run since 1897. It is a true West Australian Classic. A handicap road race with amazing scenery, one quiet road and 114km of Heroic riding.
Rolling over undulating terrain, riders travel through rural views and canola fields, into shaded bushland of Wandoo National Park. The turnaround on to the return run sees a fast flowing slightly downhill run – handicap groups will need to work well to keep the scratch men at bay. The racing climaxes in the short rise on the approach to Lenard Rd with 4km to go– the first rider to crest holds the advantage in a fast run into the line. The handicap format encourages groups to work well together over the parcours.
Originally called “The Rover Road Race” of 1897 it was the brainchild of Percy Armstrong, noted rider and entrepreneurial owner of the Rover Cycling Agency. The gruelling event of 116 miles over rough turn of the century roads proved popular and was later re-named The Beverley to Perth Race – or simply the “Beverley”.
