The Westral Wheelrace is BACK in 2020 as part of the Westral Wheelrace Track Carnival! Get ready for an action-packed night on the boards with
This will be the first track racing event to return to WA post-lockdown, and it is going to be huge! Entries are opening soon.
Provisional Event Program:
For the uninitiated, the Westral is a handicap race ran over 6 laps (1500m) where riders are assigned staggered starting positions around the track according to their previous race results. The fastest racers will be placed on the start/finish line (“scratch”), and will need to complete the full 6 laps. Less experienced riders will start further up the track, receiving a distance advantage over the scratch riders. This means that in order to win the race, the scratch riders must complete a further distance in a quicker time. Given the short distance of the race, this can be incredibly challenging as riders will need to accelerate hard immediately after the start gun is fired, and maintain a very high average speed (often 50km/hr+) for up to two minutes. If the handicappers place the riders well, the end of the race should come down to an exciting bunch kick, where all riders are in with a chance for the win!
With past winners including the likes of Sam Welsford, Stephen Hall, Darryn Hill, Steele Bishop, and many more, will your name join this list of champions in 2020?
The Westral Wheelrace will be run across Open Men, Open Women and Junior categories. If you wish to race the Westral you must enter by midnight on Tuesday prior to the event so the handicappers can organise the riders’ handicaps. Late entries will be accepted, but unfortunately you will not be eligible to race the Westral.
Spectators are welcome and encouraged at the Westral Wheelrace Track Carnival by gold coin entry to support WestCycle’s Junior Development program. Fixed tiered seating is available for up to 1,500 spectators. Extensive free parking, including accessible parking, is available in the vicinity of the SpeedDome. Food and drink will be available to purchase on the night.
