The Santos Women’s Cup returns to South Australia next week, with 78 women from five countries registered in the exciting three-day event to be held in conjunction with the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under.
The 2014 edition of the Cup, presented by Cycling South Australia and supported by Santos and Events South Australia, will consist of two criteriums and a road race to be held on consecutive days on the streets of Adelaide, Angaston and Prospect.
Canberra’s Gracie Elvin, who on Saturday became the first woman in twenty years to defend her national road race crown, will headline a stellar line up of cyclists who will battle for the coveted Santos blue leader’s jersey and approx. $8,000 in prize money.
“The Santos Women’s Cup is a fantastic opportunity for women to showcase their racing in front of great crowds in Adelaide, which is an awesome venue for cycling,” said the ORICA-AIS rider who will be joined by team mates Amanda Spratt (NSW), Jessie Maclean (ACT), Carlee Taylor (SA), Shara Gillow (QLD), Annette Edmondson (SA) and Melissa Hoskins (WA).
“This event is so important for women’s cycling in Australia, as there are not that many high profile events in Australia or the Oceania region.
“So this is a really great step to get more for women to race on such a high profile stage, alongside such a great event like the Santos Tour Down Under,” Elvin added.
Former national champions Ruth Corset (QLD) and Bridie O’Donnell (VIC), plus reigning MTB cross country national champion Peta Mullens (VIC) will also line up.
