Dear Cyclassic and Community Challenge participants,
On behalf of the Eastern Goldfields Cycling Club Inc I would like to welcome you to the Northern Goldfields and thank you for entering the 2019 Goldfields Cyclassic and Community Challenge. We are looking forward to seeing you and to hosting another memorable event. Here’s hoping for sunny and warm weather conditions for both days with safe and exciting racing.
All relevant details about the weekend are available on the website http://www.cyclassic.com.au Please take the time to familiarise yourself with that information. Here are some important points to note:

Disc brakes are permitted in the event.
Cameras are permitted with approval from the chief commissaire.
To be covered by Cycling Australia in regard to Insurance you need to hold a “Race Membership” (Community Challenge Riders excluded).
Riders are not permitted to cross the white line in the middle of the road while on the Goldfields Highway. This is part of our permit conditions and a legal obligation. As such, the Commissaires will be monitoring riders. Riders who breach this rule will be disqualified. There are many road trains and caravans that will be using the Goldfields Highway at the same time as the race and for your own and others’ safety, this rule must be adhered to at all times.
All riders must have a helmet that complies with the Road Traffic Act – Australian Standards
(AS/NZS 2063), not European Standard.
All grades will have a support vehicle following the peloton. The vehicle will be carrying neutral spares, safety equipment and first aid kits.
The race will be followed by St John Ambulance and a Community Paramedic in the event of medical emergency.
The GRT bus will act as the sag wagon. The spares vehicle will not pick up riders who drop out of the race. Please wait for the sag wagon. If riders are directed for their own safety to get on the sag wagon by Commissaires or Race Director and refuse to do so may receive penalties/fines. The safety of all riders is paramount. This is a well-travelled road, but it is still very isolated.
Charter Flight from Perth to Kalgoorlie Saturday 1st of June 2019 (AM)

If you are travelling on the charter plane on Saturday morning, you must check in by 6:00am at the latest with the flight scheduled to leave at 6:30am SHARP. All normal expectations for air travel in Australia must be met. BIKES cannot be transported on this leg without prior arrangement.
All passengers must bring photo ID to check in.
There are paid car parking facilities across from the Cobham Aviation Terminal or there is a taxi rank outside the terminal entrance. If you are using the paid parking, please do not lose your parking ticket. Staff will be at the terminal on your return to Perth to pay for parking by CARD ONLY.
The flight will be met at Kalgoorlie Airport by the GRT Minesite Transfers bus to ferry participants to the Kalgoorlie Basketball Stadium for Registrations.
Charter Flight from Leonora to Perth Sunday 2nd of June 2019 (PM)
17.00 SHARP – Bus departs from the Leonora Bowling Club, to Leonora Airport .
If you are travelling on the charter plane on Sunday Evening, you must check in by 5:30pm at the latest with flight scheduled to leave at 18:00 SHARP. All normal expectations for air travel in Australia must be met. BIKES cannot be transported on this leg without prior arrangement.
All passengers must bring photo ID to check in.
If you are using the paid parking, please do not lose your parking ticket. Staff will be at the terminal on your return to Perth to pay for parking by CARD ONLY.
Please see the website for bike transport details http://www.cyclassic.com.au. Bikes will only be transported if they have been packed in a bike box or bike transport bag, made for the purpose of shipping. We strongly recommend that your bike is insured. The race organisers and Eastern Goldfields Cycle Club Inc are not liable for any damage that occurs during transportation or while bikes are stored in the truck. Riders are responsible for taking care of their bikes at all times.
Your bike will be waiting for you at the Basketball Stadium cnr Brookman Street and Outridge Terrace from 07:00 on Saturday 1st of June. We have racks available and also a bike mechanic – thank you to Avantiplus Kalgoorlie and Grant Bull. Bike bags and your personal bags should be packed in the Allied Pickfords truck. Toilets, tea, coffee and snacks will also be available for purchase at the Basketball Stadium.
At the conclusion of the race in Leonora bikes will be transported in the Allied Pickfords truck back to Perth.

If you intend on camping in Menzies and you don’t have the luxury of a caravan, there is quite a bit of space on the grassed area adjacent to the kitchen at the Menzies Caravan Park. Camping on the Oval in Menzies is permitted however there is a fireworks display on the oval and it may be advisable to set your tent up after they have concluded (19:45). Bring plenty of warm blankets/sleeping bag, it is very cold in Menzies at night and first thing in the morning. CAMPING EQUIPMENT CAN BE TRANSPORTED ON THE ALLIED PICKFORDS TRUCK ALONG WITH YOUR BIKE (No gas canisters or flammable goods please).
All prize money will be completed via an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) after the event. Please bring your BSB and Account number so the funds can be transferred into your account. Transfers will be completed in the week after the event by the club Treasurer.
Note 1: Eligibility criteria for EGCC members for EGCC prize money – riders must have participated in a minimum of three club races prior to the Cyclassic.
Note 2: Guest rider licence holders (One Week Race License) are only eligible for the main line honours prizes if entered in A or B grade.
Prizes are awarded in merit order, meaning winners will receive the highest prize applicable to their place in the event.
DAY ONE – 1st JUNE 2019 – SHIRE OF MENZIES – CHAS EGAN MEMORIAL – MENZIES CLASSIC
07.00 to 9.00am at the Basketball Stadium, cnr Brookman Street and Outridge Terrace for all Cyclassic and Community Challenge participants.
Please Note: When registering for the Cyclassic (excluding Community Challenge participants) you must surrender a copy of your Cycling Australia license or a printed copy of One Week Race license to registrations volunteers. If you do not bring your license with you, you will be asked to surrender another form of identification, such as your driver’s licence, to ensure timing chips and race numbers are returned.
Race briefing for Community Challenge participants is at 08:30 at the Basketball Stadium. Please ensure you register prior to this briefing. Briefing is compulsory for all riders in a team.
Race briefing for those in A, B, C or D grade is at 09.00 at the Basketball Stadium. Race Briefing is compulsory for all riders – local riders you must also attend.
09.30 Community Challenge Riders depart
10.10 to 11.00 Grades depart – departure time will be advised on the day.
Race start is on Hannan Street. There is no neutral zone.
Race starts at Monty’s Restaurant, Hannan Street, turn left onto Goldfields Highway and continue north for 132 km to Menzies. There are four sprints along the way. The sprints are marked from 500, 200 and 100 metres to go to the sprint finish line.
The race finishes on the left-hand side of Shenton Street, opposite the Menzies Town Hall. On completion of the race, if you are riding the Menzies Classic only or the Community Challenge hand in Timing chips and numbers to the Registration desk located outside the Visitor’s Centre on Brown Street. Note – Race licenses will only be returned once the Chief Commissaire has given the all clear to do so (not applicable to Community Challenge riders).
Muffins and fruit will be available at the Registration desk. Showers will be open adjacent to the Town Hall and at the Caravan Park. Please ensure you have a towel and everything you need to be comfortable after the race. It can be very cold in Menzies at this time of the year, so bring lots of warm and wet weather clothing.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are staying at Morapoi Station you will need to pack a towel to shower in Menzies after the event as the bus will not be going to accommodation at Morapoi until after the awards dinner at 19:45pm.
The Allied Pickfords truck will be located in the car park on the north side of Brown Street (opposite the registration desk). Bags can be picked up and bikes locked away from 13.30 hrs. You are responsible for your bike and expected to assist the driver to load it onto the truck safely.
Please note that the GRT Minesite Transfers bus will not be leaving for Morapoi until after the Awards dinner and fireworks display.
This year there will once again be kids street sprints in the main street of Menzies after the main peloton of riders has finished. All the kids get a medal for participating and they all have the chance to win a scooter. I ask that you support the children by watching and encouraging them in their events.
Menzies Awards Dinner and Prize Giving
The Kookynie Volunteers Association once again is putting on a fabulous dinner for riders and supporters. If you haven’t already bought your meal tickets they are able to be purchased at the registration desk on Saturday morning at a cost of $20 per person (cash only). The cost is the same for children. Dinner starts from 5 pm, all are welcome.
Awards will commence at approximately 6.40 pm. Stage winner, Grades and Sprints for the Menzies Classic to be awarded.
Other Evening entertainment is courtesy of the Shire of Menzies – this is one of the best parts of the whole weekend, DJ Rev gets everyone rocking and the spectacular Fireworks Display just about beats Sydney on New Year’s Eve. Please stay to enjoy the festivities.
At approximately 19.50 the GRT bus leaves for accommodation at Morapoi Station.
Please note that a bus has not been provided back to Kalgoorlie on Saturday, 2 June 2019.
DAY TWO – 2nd JUNE 2019 – MINARA RESOURCES – LEONORA GOLDEN WHEELS
For those riders who are staying at Morapoi, the bus leaves at 07.30 sharp for Menzies.
A community breakfast is being kindly provided by the Shire of Menzies and the catering by the Kookyine Volunteers Association in the Town Hall. Doors open from 06.30 hrs.
Race briefing is at 09.00 at the Menzies Town Hall. Race Briefing is compulsory for all riders – local riders must also attend.
09:50 – 10.30 Grades depart – times will be advised on the day. Race Start is on the west side of Shenton Street, opposite the Menzies Town Hall. RACE START TIMES MAY VARY DEPENDING ON THE PREVAILING WIND CONDITIONS.
Start at the Menzies Town Hall. Head north to Leonora. There are three sprints along the way. The sprints are clearly marked from 500, 200 and 100 metres to go to the sprint finish line.
- Travel through town
- Travel to the right hand side of Tower street after manned intersection with Rochester St
- Left into Rajah St
- Left into Hall St
- Left into Rochester St
- Left into Tower St
- Finish at Trump St
- Road will be closed at the discretion of the Leonora Golden Gift Organisers (we are interacting with their event and they also have a schedule to stick to, the main street finishing window we are given is outside or our control) at which time riders will turn left into Rochester St and finish at the Caravan Park.
Riders who have crossed the finish line need to stay to the extreme left when turning into Rajah Street to go back to the Registration desk (located in the carpark on the east side of Otterburn Street – in between Tower St and Hall St). The road will be coned and all corners marshalled.
On completion of the race, hand in your number and timing chip to the Registration desk, pack up your bike and load it into the Allied Pickfords truck. The Bowling Club, Trump Street will be open from 12.30 hrs and is available for showers. The showers at the Caravan Park are also available.
Note – Race licenses will only be returned once the Chief Commissaire has given the all clear to do so.
Refreshments and finger food will be provided at the Bowling Club from 15.45 onwards. These are complimentary.
The awarding of the overall Goldfields Cyclassic prizes will take place on the Track Side Stage, Tower Street following the main Lenonra Golden Gift presentation which commence at 15.10 hrs. All riders to the track side stage please.
The awarding of Stage, Grade and Sprint prizes will take place at the Bowling Club at approximately 15.45.
For those of you who need transport back to Kalgoorlie, the GRT Minesite Transfer bus will be departing from the Bowling Club after dropping those who are travelling on the charter flight to the Leonora Airport at approximately 18.00 hrs.
