Bike Week 2016 Grants Now Open

WestCycle and the Department of Transport are calling on bike enthusiasts, community groups, arts collectives, local governments and other organisations across Western Australia to apply for grants to host events during Bike Week 2016.

Bike Week 2016

Running from Saturday 12th March to Sunday 20th March 2016, Bike Week is the state’s annual celebration of bike riding for transport and fun.

A total pool of $30,000 is available, with grants between $500 and $2,500 available to support events and activities as part of Bike Week 2016 celebrations.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said he hoped Bike Week 2016 would continue to encourage more people to explore their communities by bike.

“This year we saw some really creative and fun community-based events for people of all ages and abilities to get involved and ride their bikes. I hope Bike Week 2016 will once again offer fun, educational and interesting events that involve the whole community,” he said.

In 2015, more than 70 different Bike Week events were held across the state, ranging from back street bike explorations, bike maintenance workshops, learn-to-ride sessions, pedal-powered film screenings and bike-themed comedy shows.

“Getting on a bike and riding short distances instead of driving a car is just one way we can all do our bit to help reduce car traffic on our roads as well as improve our health and wellbeing,” Mr Nalder said.

“Bikes play in creating strong, liveable communities and the Bike Week grants program is a fantastic opportunity to promote the benefits of bike riding to everyone in the community”, added WestCycle Chief Executive Officer Matt Fulton.

“Creative and innovative events that engage a broader audience and raise the profile of bikes as a means of transport are strongly encouraged.”
